Apartment grilling
Enthusiasm for grilling is high among people of apartment-dwelling age, according to a recent survey by Weber grills. Two out of five people 18-34 said they were grilling more than a year ago, the survey said.
"I got this grill two days ago, and I've grilled two days so far," Rob Daggett said while grilling burgers on a recent night.
Daggett, 30, has been waiting for warm weather to take advantage of his Ukrainian Village apartment's deck—something he didn't have when he lived on theGold Coast.
In Rogers Park, roommates Nate Camden, 22, and Matt Sinacore, 21, aren't deterred by not having a porch. Their building has a communal grilling area that's dimly lit and has led to burned hands as the guys rescue errant pieces of Texas toast from the coals. But they say it's worth it to be able to get their grill on.
"We're pretty pro now, I think," Sinacore said. The roommates and their friends like grilling because it's a cheap alternative to going to a restaurant. They grill chicken, fish, corn and asparagus. "We'll all chip in for it," he said. "It brings everyone together.
