Guest Commentary: Backyard grilling is not without risk
Every year Wilton residents look forward to summer vacations, cookouts, barbecues, and other outdoor activities. The Wilton Fire Department would like to take a moment to remind everyone that care should be taken with respect to outdoor cooking. The Consumer Products Safety Commission estimates that nearly 3,800 Americans are injured each year by gas or charcoal grill fires, not to mention the property damage that these fires can cause. Minding some simple safety tips can help keep your summer safe and enjoyable.
Keep barbecue grills far away from anything that can burn: your home, cars, dry vegetation, deck rails, etc. Many grills have a grease trap that needs to be emptied periodically to keep the grease from igniting. Also, always stay with the grill when lit and keep children and pets well away from the area.When barbecuing, protect yourself by wearing a heavy apron and an oven mitt that fits high up over your forearm. Long-handled grilling utensils will also help keep the chef from getting burned. If you do get burned, run cool water over the burn for 10 to 15 minutes. (Don’t use butter or a salve on burns because these seal in heat and can damage the tissue further.) If you receive a serious burn, promptly seek medical attention.

Hi, I bought this grill because I was looking for one requiring minimal storage capacity. Not a lot of grill plates, compact, etc. This grills very well and I am pleased in that regard. However, it is supposed to close for upright storage, but the latch on the left side has already broken. The knob on the right side works (but if you crank it too much, the piece the knob is attached to starts to come off the handle) so the thing sort of closes….it’s kind of half open on one side because of the latch. Disappointing since this is the main reason I bought this model, and for that reason I gave it two stars (and that is being generous).
